Welcome

Nothing can prepare you for the love you feel when you become a parent. Despite the satisfaction parenting brings, the day-to-day challenges can be overwhelming, and sometimes lonely, in our modern day world. Parenting Together with Positive Discipline creates a community where, together, we learn how to create more positive and joyful relationships with our children.

The 8-week long course meets weekly to…

  • address real issues for parents of today’s kids
  • learn over 50 long-term tools for increasing cooperation and connection
  • create a support network for parents of the Cairo American College community

“I loved this course and am so very proud to be apart of a community that provides such important and valuable information.”

CAC Parent – Dec. 2021

Parenting Together is designed around the principles of Positive Discipline, which seeks to create mutually respectful relationships between children and adults, both in the home and at school. Topics covered include:

  • Parenting styles
  • Child development and temperament
  • How to handle misbehavior
  • Kind and Firm parenting strategies
  • Communication that encourages listening and problem solving
  • Creative, fun ways that foster cooperation in the home
  • Discipline that makes sense

What is Positive Discipline?

Many people believe they have only two parenting choices– they can choose to be permissive (giving in) or they can choose to be authoritarian (controlling).  Both choices are equally ineffective in helping children reach their full potential.

Positive Discipline, created by Jane Nelsen, is both kind and firm. It creates a highly effective middle ground between permissiveness and strictness that respects the child, the adult, AND the situation.  Through mutual respect children feel a sense of connection as they develop the life skills of cooperation, concern for others and self-discipline. The effects are long-term as children discover their own capability and significance in an atmosphere of acceptance and encouragement.

Where did we ever get the crazy idea that in order to make children do better, first we have to make them feel worse?”

– Jane Nelsen, Ed.D Positive Discipline Founder
