Media Balance – Family Activity
Do a media balance check up on the whole family!
This is one of my favorite family activities to do in the ongoing quest to maintain healthy media balance.
The activity (adapted from www.commonsensemedia.org) benefits the whole family. Parents and children work together to answer questions about their media use, and then decide if they want to make some changes.
Introduce the activity when everyone is calm and there are no time constraints. Use the following script to start the discussion:
We balance the food we eat to stay healthy. We also need to balance our media use. Media includes the shows and videos we watch, the video games and apps we play, and the music we listen to. It’s important for all of us, Mommy and Papi too, to stay aware of how our time “on-screens” fits into our lives.

When creating your plan, work with your children to come up with an agreement that is Related, Respectful, Reasonable and Helpful for everyone. How to Set Healthy Screen Time Limits
Keeping kids safe online and setting healthy screen time limits can be a daily struggle. Start with the following guidelines to help you determine your “non negotiables”. Then, work with your family to come up with agreements that are Reasonable, Respectful and Related.
